TLDR: I bought a $30K professional cinema camera that doesn't work unless I sign away my rights to privacy and possibly the video content I make with it ( at least it seems ) Over the past few years my photography business has seen a surge in demand for ultra high quality video production work. In an effort to meet this demand, I picked up one of RED Digital Cinema's newest pro camera bodies, the RED V-RAPTOR. Considering this camera is used by professional filmmakers to create films destined for cinemas, it's not surprising that it came with a $30k price tag. After unboxing and assembling it, I power the camera on and the first thing I see is a wall of legal text on the embedded LCD. Turns out it's a "Software License Agreement" that I'm required to consent to using the on-camera menu buttons before any of the camera's functionality becomes available. I can give consent or power the camera off. The full text can be found on the manufacturer's website at https://ift.tt/9ciyuMO . Here are a few highlights > 4. CONSENT TO USE OF DATA. You agree that RED and its affiliates may collect, maintain, process, transmit, and use technical, diagnostic, usage and related information, including but not limited to information about your RED Camera, Camera Module, computer, system and application software, usage, content, and peripherals. RED may use the information to provide and improve RED’s products and services, including providing the information to RED’s licensors. RED may also provide the information to third party advertisers for the purpose of providing advertising statistics without identifying you personally ... > 5. UPDATES. RED and its licensors have no obligation to provide updates, bug fixes or error correction. If RED provides updates, such updates may be automatic and may delete or change the nature or features of the Software, including functions you may rely upon and you may lose data. You consent to updates by RED ... I'm interpreting it to mean that RED and whoever they see fit may access not only data on and about my personal computer but also the actual video content that I create with my camera. Furthermore, they are permitted to share all that with advertisers. It seems like I must be misunderstanding this because I can't imagine professional videographers being willing to consent to such blatant violations of their own customer's expectations of privacy and discretion. Many of the jobs I get are product shoots for prototypes and things yet to be released. Some of them even require an NDA from me. There's no way my clients would work with me if they knew that my camera might be capturing frames from their commissioned videos and transmitting them behind the scenes to advertisers. This camera has been assembled but collecting dust for over a week now. I'm on the verge of returning it and eating the 2k I spent on compatible peripherals. I would love some input from anyone who can offer clarity. My questions are as follows: 1. Is my assessment of the implications of this license agreement correct or am I misunderstanding the legalese? 2. Is this type of EULA, where the most basic functionality of a hardware device is held hostage pending the user consents to some arbitrary agreement legal in the USA and/or Europe? Is there actually a legal precedent allowing for it? 3. For film pros, do the top of the line Arris and Panavisions take these same liberties?

Unless you've been very careful, your production logs almost certainly contain secrets or personally identifying information. I was surprised (and annoyed) to receive the email below from New Relic, stating that on 5/3 they will start ingesting all production log data, by default. To make matters worse, if you provisioned New Relic through Heroku, you can only opt out (by enabling High Security Mode) if you contact support. And if you're on the free plan, you can't open support tickets so have to ask on the community forum. > New Relic APM agents will collect log data starting 5/3! We’ve been hard at work making improvements to our APM and logging capabilities, and when you update certain APM agents starting May 3, 2022, logs will be automatically collected and sent to New Relic One. Logs are a critical telemetry type for observability and this new feature will help you troubleshoot your applications faster. You probably have a few questions—including how to customize your logs ingest—so we’re including a FAQ below. FAQ: Q: Why did you make this change? A: Logs are a critical telemetry data type but they are messy. This improvement allows users to send contextualized log data to New Relic without any additional setup. Relevant log data is now surfaced and correlated with other application telemetry automatically, reducing the need to switch context or run log queries when troubleshooting your applications. Q: Which APM agents will have automatic logs collection and ingest upon upgrade? A: Starting May 3, 2022, when users upgrade to the latest version of the Java, Ruby, and .NET agent, log ingest will be enabled by default, unless High Security Mode is enabled or you have enabled the logs toggle for your accounts (more information on this below). Sorry if this is silly but today I have discovered that my (pricey, I know) Ergodox-ez keyboard (but I assume any other "programmable" keyboard should work likewise) allows for any key to be programmed either for "press" or "hold". And after more than a year using an uncomfortable configuration for my wrist (I use emacs a LOT), I have set 'j' to behave as CTRL when hold. And then my mind has blown up. No more weird thumb positions, or elongated pinkies. I had done this with one of the large thumb keys for space when pressed, Meta when hold, but I had never imagined using 'j' (or, say 'f') for that.

I know there are several counterexamples, but in general I'm impressed that Apple manages to keep new products/features under wraps until a major event, and then the product is in stores a couple weeks later with pretty high quality (user experience, reliability, minimal major bugs, etc.) Can anyone who has first-hand knowledge shed some light on how this is achieved with what I assume is quite limited user testing to contain leaks. Even working on products with multiple public betas and customer feedback sessions, it's hard to hit a high quality bar with a product release.

So i am a junior software developer in a large consultant company and have my first salary negotitations soon and need some help. I was told all juniors would increase the same in a sort of collective way since some did not get the same chances when it came to projects and performance, however my boss said there was a small change they would consider giving a larger raise based on performance. I have been lucky and got a very good project, as in I could show my strengths and it's a high value customer. During the project i took a lot of initiative and responsibility, we were 3 developers working on it (2 seniors and me) and luckily one of them is my boss. The project is now being used by the customer and I am the only one maintaining the project and feeling I have taken even more responsibility than was expected. The project was fairly large consisting of 2 frontends and one backend, where I made ~80% of both the frontends and did all the database work on the backend. To be honest being told that my performance wont impact my salary is kind of a bummer considering i have to wait another year for the next possible raise. I can see myself working here for some time, but i feel like saying that would make them feel like they can pay me less as im not going to leave in the foreseeable future. The project is now also being used as a reference to sell consultants to other customers and it has also garnered attention in nationwide news. So my question to you is how should approach the salary negotiation and how should i present my case to my boss? Sorry if this is incoherent, english is not my first language. Thanks.

Some background first: I've been a software engineer for ~7 years now. I have a decently paying job, but we're definitely in the first base stretch of home ownership and have 2 children (~1 and ~4 years old). My wife has a strong academic background in pedagogy and LOVES teaching high school, but with the pandemic teaching has really affected her relationship with our girls due to the sheer amount of work being dumped on her. Teacher and admin attrition at her school was suffering terribly and it was leading to her being forced to pick either continuing to work as a teacher and sacrifice all of her time with our kids or figure something else out. I was in awe of my wife's capacity for work and the number of plates she can keep spinning while still getting the highest teacher evaluation scores at her school... Only to be met with blanks stares when asked for assistance or any sort of compensation or promotion for the amount of work she was picking up. So she left. After some reflection, we're both worried that teaching in general is at a place where most schools will be similar. On top of this, she originally went into teaching thinking that I'd take mornings (get the kids ready and to school/ daycare) and she'd get afternoons since schools are usually out ~3pm. But since the pandemic school hours continue to stretch, further cutting down on what little time she can be with our children. So, back to my question: She's at a crossroads, but my professional experience doesn't overlap much and most of my connections are not adjacent to education or instructional design. I'm poking my network and friends and family, but it's pretty difficult to find anyone willing to give her a chance outside of education. My gut is that she needs to talk with people because throwing resumes into the void isn't going to work if you're switching industries and don't have the right key words. (Edited this to make it more clear): So, I'm looking for advice regarding how to get through to people who are currently passing over her resumes and cover letters. I think if she could get someone to talk to her, they'd realize she's a strong candidate. Also, if there are significant others who have been in my position, any advice on what I can do on my end to help would be appreciated.

You can still use the Pipedream UI to author workflows, and use Pipedream’s pre-built integration components to build integrations, but you’ll be able to serialize those workflows to code. Hey HN! Pipedream is an integration and compute platform purpose-built for developers building workflows and connecting cloud services. You can author workflows without writing any code: Pipedream supports over 700 integrated applications (GitHub, Slack, etc) [1] and all connectors are open source [2]. Hi HN! This is a little site I put together while learning the Elm language as part of a hackathon at my work, I thought you might enjoy it. Be sure to click the `(source)` buttons next to the graphs: you can edit them interactively & write your own queries against the entire data set. The syntax isn't well documented yet, but you can probably get the general idea pretty quickly based on the examples there. If you like it, have questions, etc. let me know! If folks think this is cool, maybe I can get it turned into a legit project. :)
